So you need some help to find your way around the station? No problem, here's a Station Guide, also called Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). So far what is explained here are things that we asked ourselves when we first set this board up. We will add more info here with time and as questions come in. Feel free to suggest more things to explain through a thread in this board.

Answers:

How do I see my Reply Window in Standard View or WYSIWYG rather than html?
  • Click on the icon with the cursor arrow inside red square brackets, it's above the row of smileys

How do I undo an action when there is no Undo icon?
  • On a PC the following shortcuts might be good to know:
    Ctrl+z will undo actions
Others you might find useful when posting are:
    Ctrl+x = Cut
    Ctrl+c = Copy
    Ctrl+v = Paste
    Ctrl+y = Redo
    Ctrl+a = Mark All
  • On a Mac the shortcuts would be:
    Cmd+z = undo
    Cmd+x = Cut
    Cmd+c = Copy
    Cmd+v = Paste
    Cmd+y = Redo/repeat
    Cmd+a = Mark All

How do I report an inappropriate post?
  • Every post has a small red exclamation mark at the lower left side, to the far right from the Reply and Quote buttons. Locate it for the post you wish to report.
  • Fill in the reason why you think this is inappropriate in the Comment field
  • Hit Submit and an email will be sent to all moderators and administrators on that board.

How do I link to an URL?
  • In the reply window hit the button with a globe.
It will insert the following in your post area:[url][/url]
  • In the first bracket enter =the_url_you want to add
  • Between the brackets enter what_you_want_to_show_up.
  • Example: [url=http://forum.discussionstation.com/index.php]The Discussion Station[/url] will show up as: The Discussion Station.

How do I use a table?
  • If you would like to put something like the following in a table:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    | Author       | Book                                                           |
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    | JK Rowling | The Casual Vacancy                                    |
    |                   | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban |
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    | JRR Tolkien | The Two Towers                                         |
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    | C Dickens   | Oliver Twist                                                |
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    You would type the following:
    [table]
    [tr]
    [td]Author[/td]
    [td]Book[/td]
    [/tr]
    [tr]
    [td]JK Rowling[/td]
    [td]The Casual Vacancy
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban[/td]
    [/tr]
    [tr]
    [td]JRR Tolkien[/td]
    [td]The Two Towers[/td]
    [/tr]
    [tr]
    [td]C Dickens[/td]
    [td]Oliver Twist[/td]
    [/tr]
    [/table]
Explanation: "table ....  /table" encloses everything to make it a table.
"tr ..... /tr" encloses each row
"td ..... /td" encloses each column within a row.
The above code will show up as:
AuthorBook
JK RowlingThe Casual Vacancy
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
JRR TolkienThe Two Towers
C DickensOliver Twist
  • You can also use some formatting codes within the "td .... /td" tags to get, for example, the header row in bold, see below.
  • Further, note that it is essential that each row has the same amount of columns (td blocks), so even if you plan to leave some columns empty you have to put up the empty "td /td" anyway. Example:
    [table]
    [tr]
    [td][b]Author[/b][/td]
    [td][b]Book[/b][/td]
    [/tr]
    [tr]
    [td]JK Rowling[/td]
    [td]The Casual Vacancy
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban[/td]
    [/tr]
    [tr]
    [td]JRR Tolkien[/td]
    [td][/td]
    [/tr]
    [tr]
    [td][/td]
    [td]Oliver Twist[/td]
    [/tr]
    [/table]
    Which gives:
AuthorBook
JK RowlingThe Casual Vacancy
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
JRR Tolkien
Oliver Twist
  • Finally, please note that the "table .... /table" tag does not do well inside a list or any other kind of formatting. It will typically ignore any formatting tags that surrounds the entire table and throw some minor tantrum to boot. So if you want every entry in bold, you have to put "td b .... /b /td", ie bolding every cell in the table individually, rather than going "b table .... /table /b", which would not give the intended effect at all.

How do I add a spoiler tag?
  • Type: Some text [spoiler]My hidden text[/spoiler]Some more text
  • And it will show up as: Some text
    Spoiler
    My hidden text
    Some more text
  • Press the plus sign(+) to read it.

How do I use the Youtube button and what is it for?
You use it to link to a Youtube video in such a way as to have it ready to run from within your post. To use it:
  • In the reply window hit the button with a black rectangle with a white dot in the middle (to the left of the image button).
It will insert the following in your post area:[youtube][/youtube]
  • Enter the link to the youtube video between the tags.
  • Example: [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5Pj-MPN_co[/youtube]
     will show up as:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5Pj-MPN_co" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5Pj-MPN_co</a>.

How do I Block or Ignore another member or add people to my Buddies list?
  • Go to the Profile link at the top of the forum
  • Go to Modify Profile in the left hand navigation panel
  • Select Buddies/Ignore List
  • Click either the Edit Buddies button or the Edit Ignore List button
  • Add the member's name into the Member window
  • Click Add
  • If you wish to remove a member from either list click the red cross icon to the right of their name in the list.

Why are some usernames on the list of members currently online in different colors?
The Discussion Station staff members have their names color coded so it's easy to see if they're online, in case our regular members need help.
  • gold = Regular Member
  • red = Site Administrator
  • blue = Forum Moderator
  • green = Site Staffer (who's not a Forum Moderator)

How do I change the time display in the forums to my local time zone?
  • Go up to the menu at the top of the forum and click on Profile.
  • Hover over Modify Profile and click on Look and Layout from the list.
  • In the Time Offset box, 0 would be the default and is GMT time, which is displayed right below where it says "Current forum time".
  • Enter the time offset for your local time zone.  For example, if you're in the Eastern time zone in US & Canada, you would put in -5.
  • Click on the Change profile button at the bottom of the page to save the setting.

How do I turn the popup notices when I receive new personal messages on or off?
  • Go up to the menu at the top of the forum and click on Profile.
  • Hover over Modify Profile and click on Personal Messaging from the list.
  • Where it says Show a popup when I receive new messages, check the box if you want the feature turned on, or uncheck the box if you want it turned off.
  • Click on the Change profile button at the bottom of the page to save the setting.

How do I exclude certain subforums/boards from the Recent Posts list and the Unread Posts list?
  • Go up to the menu at the top of the forum and click on Profile.
  • Hover over Modify Profile and click on Ignore Boards Options from the list.
  • On the next screen, you can check off up to ten boards that you would like to exclude from your Recent Posts and Unread Posts lists.  For example, the game posts in the Off-Topic Forum's Recreation Center tend to be short but numerous, and those posts can quickly clog up the Recent Posts list.  If you're not interested in seeing those, you can put a check mark next to Recreation Center on the list.
  • Click on the Change profile button at the bottom of the page to save the setting.

How do I quote?
There are many different ways to insert quotes in your posts.
  • When you look at a thread, before you have a reply screen up, you can see that every individual post has two buttons in the lower right corner: Reply and Quote. Hit the latter and the entire content of the quoted post will be inserted into your reply window, between the two tags
[quote author=XXX link=... date=....] and [/quote]. The first (opening) quote-tag includes information that allows the board to (automatically) both tell who said it, and provide a link to the post in which it was said.
  • If you've already hit Reply when you remember that you want to insert a quote or you want to quote multiple posts, there are three different ways to go about it from within an opened Reply window:
    • To get the same kind of linked quotes as above, scroll below the Save and Preview buttons to the Topic Summary. Here the latest twenty or so posts from the thread is listed in reverse order, each with an Insert Quote button at the top right corner. Hit this button to insert the contents of that post in your reply window.
    • If the text you wish to quote do not originate from DS, for example you are quoting a book or a movie, you can hit the Quote button from the Reply window. It is located imediately above the topmost smiley row and looks like this . Hitting it inserts the following in your Reply window: [quote][/quote].
    • You can also type in the tags [quote][/quote] manually.
In all cases the quote will be inserted into the reply window at the place where your cursor currently is.

How do I use the quote tags?
See the answer above on how to get the quote tags into your reply window in the first place. This is how the quote tags work.

Example: If you have the following in your reply window:
****
This is text that will appear above the quote.
[quote]This is the text that will appear in the quote.[/quote]
This is any comment you wish to add after the quote.
****

It will appear like this, when posted:
****
This is text that will appear above the quote.
Quote
This is the text that will appear in the quote.
This is any comment you wish to add after the quote.
****

How do I quote from a different thread than the one I'm replying to?
  • Open two windows (or two tabs) in your browser.
  • In the first window, go to the first thread and find the post where you have something you want to quote.  Pretend you're quoting and replying in that thread by clicking on the 'Quote' or 'Insert Quote' button to get the quote tags to appear in the reply box.
  • In the second window, go to the second thread where you'd like to post your actual reply, and open up a reply box.
  • Now go back to the first window, and select/highlight and copy the quote (including the quote tags) you want, then paste everything you've just copied into the second window.
